With the outbreak of World War II, Suzuki’s production plans for the new vehicle were halted when the government declared civilian passenger cars as “non-essential goods”. At the end of the war, Suzuki returned to producing looms. Handloom production was encouraged when the US government approved cotton shipments to Japan. Suzuki’s fortunes brightened as orders from domestic textile manufacturers began to increase. The joy was short-lived as the cotton market collapsed in 1951.

Faced with this huge challenge, Suzuki returned to the production of motor vehicles. After the war, the Japanese were in dire need of affordable, reliable private transportation. Several companies began offering “clip-on” gas-powered engines that are connected to ordinary bicycles. Suzuki’s first two-wheeler was a bicycle equipped with a motor, the “Power Free”, cheap to build and maintain and simple in design, the 1952 Power Free had a 36 cc, one horsepower, two-stroke engine.

The new double-sprocket gear system enabled the passenger to pedal with engine assistance, pedal without engine assistance, or simply disengage the pedals and ride on engine power alone.
