On 16 December 1971, an independent state called Bangladesh took place on the world map. Today’s independence was achieved through a long and bloody nine-month war.
It would never have been possible to defeat a surprise attack by West Pakistani forces without proper tactics. In the war of liberation of 1971, dividing the whole country into 11 sectors was the first successful step of the strategy of the freedom fighters.
Today I will tell you about the 11 sectors of the liberation war, their boundaries, and sector commanders.
Ataul Gani Osmani was the chief commander of our liberation war in 1971. He decided to divide the whole country into several sectors to facilitate the conduct of the war.
On 11 April 1971, he divided the whole of Bangladesh into 11 sectors and 64 sub-sectors. The 11 sectors made war management much easier.

Sector 1 of the Liberation War
Chittagong and hilly Chittagong area was included in Sector 1. This sector extended from Feni river to Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati and Feni. Harina in the Indian state of Tripura was headquartered in Sector 1.
Major Ziaur Rahman was the commander of this sector from April to June 1971. Major Rafiqul Islam was the commander of Sector 1 from June to December. Sector 1 was divided into five sub-sectors.
Sector 2 of the Liberation War
Parts of Dhaka, Noakhali, Faridpur and Comilla were part of Sector 2. Sector 2 consisted of parts of Dhaka, Comilla, Akhaura-Bhairab, Noakhali and Faridpur.
Sector No. 2 was headquartered in the Meghalaya region of Tripura, India Major KM Khaled Musharraf was the commander of the sector from April to September. From September to December, Major ATM Haider was in charge of the sector. There were 6 sub-sectors in this sector.
Sector 3 of the Liberation War
Comilla, Kishoreganj and Habiganj were included in Sector 3. Sector 3 consists of parts of Comilla district east of Habiganj, Akhaura-Bhairab railway line and some parts of Kishoreganj and Dhaka.
Sector 3 of the Liberation War was headquartered at Kalagachhia in the Indian state of Tripura. Major KM Shafiullah was the commander of the sector from April to September.
Major ANM Nuruzzaman was the commander of the sector from September to December. Sector No. 3 had 6 sub-sectors.
Sector 4 of the Liberation War
Moulvibazar and the eastern part of Sylhet were part of Sector 4. Sector 4 was originally formed as part of Sylhet district.
Major CR (Chittaranjan) Dutt and Captain A Rob were the commanders of Sector 4. The headquarters of this sector was at first in Karimganj but later it was shifted to Machimpur in Assam.
Sector No. 5 of the Liberation War
Sector 5 of the Liberation War was made up of the border area of greater Mymensingh and part of Sylhet district.
The headquarters of Sector No. 5 was at Banshtala of Chhatak in Sunamganj district. The Sector Commander of this sector was Major Mir Shawkat Ali. This sector was also divided into 6 sub-sectors.
Sector No. 6 of the Liberation War
Rangpur Division was included in Sector 6. Sector No. 6 was formed with the whole of Rangpur except Thakurgaon subdivision of Dinajpur and the area on the banks of Brahmaputra river.
Young Commander MK Bashar served as the commander of Sector 6. The headquarters of this sector was Burimari, Patgram. There were 5 sub-sectors in this 6th sector.
Sector No. 7 of the Liberation War
Rajshahi Division was included in Sector 7. With the exception of Rajshahi, Pabna, the area along the Brahmaputra river, the whole of Bogra, the southern region of Dinajpur and some parts of Rangpur were formed in Sector 7.
Major Nazmul Haque, Subedar Major A Rob and Major Kazi Nuruzzaman – these three were the commanders of Sector No.7. The sector was headquartered in Tarangpur, West Bengal, India. Sector 7 had 9 sub-sectors.
Sector No. 8 of the Liberation War
Kushtia, Jessore, Daulatpur, Satkhira road up to Khulna district and some parts of Faridpur were formed in Sector 8.
Major Abu Osman Chowdhury was the commander of this sector from April to August and Major MA Manzoor was the commander of this sector from August to December. There were 7 sub-sectors in this sector.
Sector No. 9 of the Liberation War
The Sundarbans and Barisal divisions were included in Sector 9. Sector No. 9 was made up of Patuakhali, Barisal, and Khulna are parts.
Until the beginning of December, Major MA Jalil was the commander of Sector 9. For some time after that Major Joynal Abedin served as the Sector Commander.
Major MA Manzur was also in an additional charge. The sector was headquartered in Taki, Basirhat, India. Sector 9 had 3 sub-sectors.
Sector No. 10 of the Liberation War
All waterways and coastal areas were part of Sector 10. Coastal areas, naval commandos and inland shipping were under Sector 10.
Sector 10 had no sub-sector and no regular sector commander. In this sector, when the naval commandos were engaged in missions in that sector, they acted under the direction of the sector commander.
According to reliable sources, eight Bengali officers of the navy have acted as sector commanders in the sector.
Sector No. 11 of the Liberation War
The greater Mymensingh division was included in Sector 11. Apart from Kishoreganj, Mymensingh and Tangail districts formed Sector 11.
Major M Abu Taher served as the Sector Commander of Sector 11 from April to November 3. Then the sector commander of this sector was Flight Lieutenant M Hamidullah.
Mahendraganj in Assam, India was chosen as the headquarters of Sector 11. This sector was divided into 8 sub-sectors.
