Camp Nou

The Camp Nou ground, also known as the Nou Camp, is a football stadium belonging to the Spanish group Barcelona. It has been the home ground of Football Club Barcelona since 1957. Its audience capacity is 99,354. It is the largest stadium in Europe and the thirteenth largest in the world. Numerous international matches have been held in this stadium. Including two Champions League finals. Apart from this, the football of the 1992 Summer Olympics was also held in this stadium.

Construction of Camp Nou began on 28 March 1954. Although the plan was to name the Estadio del FC Barcelona, the more popular Camp Nou name was used. In 1950, Barcelona signed Kubala, who was considered one of the best players in Barcelona’s history. He gave more motivation to build a bigger stadium. Barcelona Governor Felipe Aquido Colunga laid the foundation stone. Around 60,000 Barca fans were present at the time. Construction took three years to complete and cost a total of 228 million Spanish pesetas. Which was 336 percent of the original budget. The stadium was officially opened on 24 September 1957. Barcelona defeated Legia Warsaw 4–2 in the opening friendly match at the stadium.

The club authorities invited international tenders to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary by rebuilding the stadium. The aim was to enhance the stadium’s facilities and create a highly visible urban environment. The club wanted to increase the stadium’s capacity to 13,500. Their plan was to make the stadium the fourth largest stadium in the world in terms of capacity. On 18 September 2007, British architect Norman Foster and his firm were selected to rebuild Camp Nou. The estimated cost is 250 million euros. To finance the reconstruction, the club’s board of directors approved the sale of their former training ground (mini stadium). The project will begin in 2009 and be completed by the 2011-12 season.

But the 2008 economic crisis and the subsequent fall in land values put the sale of the training ground and similar redevelopment projects on hold. In May 2010, Sandro Russell, then Barcelona’s presidential candidate, ruled out the sale of the Mini Estadio, and his election on 30 June 2010 effectively halted the Camp Nou rebuilding project.
