Hagley Oval
Hagley Oval is a cricket ground in New Zealand. The grounds are located at Hagley Park in the heart of Christchurch. Controversy erupted in 2013 when the Canterbury cricket team took steps to transform the ground into an international cricket stadium. The development was later approved by the Environmental Court.
For the first time in 1867, a record was set for this game. In that game, the host Canterbury cricket team competed against the Otago cricket team. Canterbury used the field infrequently until the 1920s. The first Plunkett Shield match was played in December 1907 against Canterbury Auckland. The Canterbury team returned to the field in 1989. The team played a number of their own matches in the 1993/94 Shell Cup.
On January 23, 2014, for the first time, a one-day international match was held at this stadium. On that day, the Scottish and Canadian cricket teams took part in the 2014 Cricket World Cup qualifiers. The ground also hosted three women’s Tests and six women’s one-day internationals.
In 2014, the New Zealand Cricket Authority declared Hagley Oval as the eighth Test cricket ground in the country. Sri Lanka and New Zealand will compete in the Boxing Day Test in Christchurch for the first time since the devastating earthquake in 2011.
