Sharjah Cricket Stadium

Sharjah Cricket Stadium is located in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. It holds the record for hosting the most ODIs at one venue with 240 ODIs till December 2019. It was originally built in the early 1980s and has undergone many improvements over the years It hosted its first international matches in April 1984 in the Asia Cup. The stadium was one of the venues earmarked for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

In 2010, at the behest of local cricket patron Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, the Sharjah Cricket Stadium became the home ground of the Afghanistan cricket team for one-day international and first-class matches. In 2016, Afghanistan changed their home ground to Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground in Noida, India. Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators used the Sharjah Cricket Stadium for most of their home games in the recent PSL season.

The cricket stadium also hosted the inaugural edition of the T10 Cricket League, a 90-minute cricket league featuring several international cricketers from 14 to 17 December 2017.

The stadium also hosted the 2018 Blind Cricket World Cup final featuring India and Pakistan where India defeated Pakistan by 2 wickets to clinch the Blind Cricket World Cup title. It has a length of 62 meters border and 58 meters straight. It has a 65m boundary at mid-wicket.

Asia Cup 2022

The 2022 Asia Cup is slated to be the 15th edition of the Asia Cup cricket tournament, with matches to be played as Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) in August and September 2022 in the United Arab Emirates. Originally scheduled to take place in September 2020, the tournament was postponed to July 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was then rescheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in June 2021 before being postponed. Pakistan was supposed to host the tournament after retaining the right to host the 2022 edition. However, in October 2021, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced that Sri Lanka would host the tournament in 2022, while Pakistan would host the 2023 edition. India is the defending champion.

On 21 July 2022, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) informed the ACC that they would not be in a position to host the tournament due to the economic and political crisis in the country. On 27 July 2022, the ACC confirmed that the tournament would be played in the United Arab Emirates, with Sri Lanka Cricket serving as the tournament’s hosts. The fixtures for the tournament was announced on 2 August 2022.
